In California, the probate court can appoint a person as a conservator of an estate, of a person, or of both. We discussed California conservatees and California conservators in previous blog posts.  A conservator of a person cares for the person and protects the person once a judge decides that a person can’t care for themselves. They make sure that a person eats the right medical care, has shelter, has enough food to eat and is clothed. Plus, depending on how much the conservatee is able to make their own decisions, the conservator may actually make the medical decisions for the conservatee.

It should be noted that just because a conservator is appointed to a person, that person isn’t automatically a conservator of the estate too. So, if someone is appointed a conservator of a person, but later feels that it’s necessary to be appointed conservator of the estate as well, they must file a new and separate petition to be appointed as conservator of the estate.
